Social Bookmarking is a common phrase among internet users, webmasters and blog owners but what is it exactly? Social bookmarking is a recent example of emerging new internet tools, sometimes known as Web 2. And in general it’s exactly as it sounds - sharing your favourite internet pages with others in a social environment.

Most web users have a list of bookmarks they keep locally on their computer - these are pages they have found interesting and want to save to come back to later - while different browsers might call them something different e.g. in Internet Explorer they are known as favourites in Firefox they are known as bookmarks. In the past to share these favourite sites with others you usually have to email the link or store it on a web page where others can access it. As you’re surfing the internet you will often come across an icon or link that says “Add to Bookmarks” or something similar, this usually refers to a social bookmarking site (or in some instances many social sites) and by clicking on the tab you can save the page to your account or share interesting pages with others. Each of these bookmarked sites are added to a selected category and in turn others can search through those categories or tags to find pages of interest.

As an internet user these social bookmark sites can be a great way to quickly surf to pages of interest or randomly select sites that may prove useful to you. As a user you can often vote on these pages, leave comments or interact with the original bookmarker or website/blog owner which is what brings in the social aspect of these bookmarks.

As a webmaster, blog owner or e-commerce site having your page added to one of these social sites can be a great way to boost your traffic and create a buzz about your site, product or company. Social bookmarking is becoming the new way to search for internet users as they can simply select their chosen category and visit sites others have already bookmarked, added to their favourites or voted on etc.
